Why Cypress Pools Turn Green in Summer (And How to Prevent It)

Green pools in Cypress aren't a maintenance failure - they're a chemistry management challenge specific to this climate. Understanding what causes them, and what prevents them, is the difference between a pool that stays clear from March through October and one that requires emergency treatment every few weeks.

What Actually Causes a Green Pool

Green pool water is almost always caused by algae - microscopic plant organisms that colonize pool water when conditions allow. The most common type, Chlorella and related green algae species, can turn pool water visibly green within 24 to 48 hours once they establish a foothold. Algae require three things to thrive: water, sunlight, and nutrients (primarily phosphates and nitrates). Your pool provides all three in abundance.

Chlorine is the primary defense against algae. Free chlorine (FC) in the 2-4 ppm range kills algae before it can establish. The problem in Cypress isn't that chlorine stops working - it's that chlorine gets consumed faster than most homeowners realize.

Why Cypress Climate Destroys Chlorine Fast

Three climate factors combine to create extreme chlorine demand in Cypress pools during summer:

UV radiation. Direct summer sunlight photodegrades unstabilized free chlorine at a rate that would shock most pool owners. After major storms, chlorine demand spikes while pool conditions simultaneously favor algae growth.

The Role of CYA (Cyanuric Acid)

Cyanuric acid is the most misunderstood chemical in Cypress pool chemistry. Many homeowners either ignore it entirely or treat it as a one-time seasonal addition. In reality, CYA management is one of the most important ongoing tasks in Cypress pool maintenance.

CYA forms a temporary bond with free chlorine that protects it from UV photodegradation. Think of it as sunscreen for chlorine - it keeps the chlorine "active" in the water rather than being destroyed by sunlight within hours of dosing. The target range for CYA in a Cypress outdoor pool is 30 to 50 ppm. Below 30 ppm, UV degradation is significant. CYA depletes over the season through dilution from rain and splash-out. A Cypress pool that starts spring at 40 ppm CYA may test at 20 ppm by August if stabilizer isn't replenished. The pool's chlorine demand is highest precisely when CYA is most likely to have depleted - a dangerous combination.

Phosphates: The Hidden Algae Fuel

Phosphates are a secondary issue that Cypress pool owners often don't learn about until they've had recurring algae problems despite maintaining adequate chlorine. Phosphates enter pools from fertilizer runoff, decaying organic debris, and the heavy pollen loads that Cypress pools accumulate during spring and early summer. They serve as fertilizer for algae - pools with high phosphate levels develop algae faster and recover more slowly from algae events than phosphate-free pools.

Standard test strips don't measure phosphates. Digital test kits or drop-based test kits with a phosphate reagent are required. The target for Cypress pools is below 200 ppb (parts per billion). Above 500 ppb, phosphate removal treatment is recommended before chemical balance alone will consistently control algae pressure.

Prevention: The Weekly Chemistry Protocol

Preventing green pools in Cypress requires a weekly chemistry check that goes beyond the two-variable "chlorine and pH" test that many homeowners default to. A complete Cypress pool chemistry check covers:

  • Free chlorine (FC): 2-4 ppm. The immediate defense against algae. Shock to 10 ppm after storms or heavy bather loads.
  • pH: 7.4-7.6. At high pH, chlorine effectiveness drops significantly. At low pH, surface etching occurs over time.
  • Total alkalinity (TA): 80-120 ppm. Alkalinity buffers pH from swinging after rain events or chemical additions.

  • Calcium hardness: 200-400 ppm. Too low causes plaster etching; too high causes scale.
  • Phosphates: below 200 ppb. Address elevated levels with phosphate remover before algae season intensifies.

What to Do When Your Pool Turns Green

If you're already dealing with a green pool, here's the recovery process:

Step 1: Shock. Raise free chlorine to 10-20 ppm using calcium hypochlorite or liquid chlorine. Granular shock is more effective than tablet chlorine for recovery - the high dose kills active algae immediately.

Step 2: Brush. Brush every surface - walls, floor, steps, and crevices - to break up algae films and expose them to the chlorine in the water. Algae grow in biofilm layers that protect the colony from chemical treatment. Brushing removes that protection.

Step 3: Run the filter continuously. Dead algae are removed through filtration. A cartridge filter may need cleaning mid-recovery. A DE filter should be backwashed after the initial treatment and again 24 to 48 hours later.

Step 4: Add algaecide. A copper-based or PolyQuat algaecide adds a second-line defense while the chlorine shock does the heavy work. Follow with a phosphate treatment if phosphates were elevated.

Step 5: Rebalance after clearance. Once the pool clears - usually 2 to 4 days - test and adjust pH, alkalinity, CYA, and calcium hardness to appropriate levels before resuming normal swimming.
